Pigeon Island National Landmark is a 44 acre islet in the north of St. Lucia which used to be off the shores of the main island of St. Lucia. It was joined to the mainland in 1979 by a man-made causeway and named Pigeon Island National Park.. It is one of the landmarks detailing st. Lucia’s history.
The first set of people to frequent Pigeon Island were the indigenous Arawaks and Carib as early as 1000 A.D. A French pirate known as Francois Le Clerc occupied the island with 330 of his men. They were the first European settlers in St. Lucia. They used Pigeon Island as their base to observe and attack Spanish ships.
Pigeon Island became a strategic point later in history for battles between the British and the French. In 1779 to 1782 Admiral Rodney commended the island and built Fort Rndney up on the hill. The two peaks were used to monitor the French Naval base on Martinique. In 1782, the French fleet was confronted and defeated in the battle of the Saints. There are several ruins of military buildings on Pigeon island which we will see up close on this tour.
